Meet Our Staff
Newton Health Care Center is fortunate to have such a dedicated team to serve our Residents. We understand by choosing Newton Health Care Center, Residents and families are placing their trust in us to provide excellence in care. Managers and staff are empowered to create a home-like environment in the facility. Caring staff, combined with continuing education, ensures our facility is working to improve upon the services we provide seniors. We believe in a holistic approach to care by meeting the needs of our Residents medically, emotionally, and socially.
Administrator, MBA – Sharon DeSpain
We would like to welcome our new Administrator, Sharon Harrington to our Newton Community. Sharon grew up in Waterloo, IA and has 2 younger brothers. She joined the Army National Guard at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged. She started her journey in Long Term Care as a C.N.A. She has worked in Hospice, Hospitals, Home Care, and Clinics before coming to our facility. Sharon attended college at Upper Iowa University and received her BS and MBA there. She currently resides in Waukee, IA. She has 3 daughters, ages 24, 23, and 16. Her hobbies include trying new foods, watching good movies, reading, and traveling. She looks forward to moving closer to Newton and beginning her new career as an Administrator!
Community Liaison Director – Katie Kuhn
Katie started her healthcare career at Urbandale Health Care Center as the Payroll, Accounts Payable Manager. She has a degree in Sociology from Central College in Pella, Iowa. Katie enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and playing with her dog Murphy.
Director of Nursing – Brenda Ruchti
Brenda was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. She moved to Grinnell in 1998 and lives in the country. She's married to Fred, who is a Vietnam Veteran. She studied to be a secretary in school and entered nursing in 1998. has 4 step-children. Brenda loves animals, especially cats. She enjoys gardening, baking, and writing essays. Her favorite color is purple.
MDS Coordinator – Kenndrea Wolka, LPN
Kenndrea has been a nurse for 17 years, all in long term care. Kenndrea earned her LPN from Marshalltown Community College. She enjoys spending time with her husband of 12 years and 2 dogs. Kenndrea also likes scrapbooking and The Beatles type music. Kenndrea joined the NHCC team in January of 2016.
Human Resources Manager – Kim Bates
Kim had several years of experience working as a business office manager before joining the team at Newton Health Care Center. Kim enjoys spending times at family gatherings, grandchildren’s sporting events and community plays. Kim joined the NHCC team in April of 2013.
Business Office Manager – Amanda Vegter
Amanda has worked in long term care for a little over 3 years as a Business Office Manager. She started with IMG at Urbandale Healthcare Center in February 2019, and recently transferred to Newton Healthcare Center. She spends her spare time with her 2 daughters, and the rest of her family and friends.
Life Enrichment Director – Kim Judge
Kim started in healthcare working in laundry and housekeeping, then moved into a direct care worker and restorative aide roll. She received her Activity Coordinator certificate from Indian Hills Community College. Kim enjoys swimming, going to movies, and traveling. Kim joined the NHCC team in May of 2009.
Rehab Coordinator - Nichole Dearborn, LPTA
Nichole has 17 years of experience working in long-term care. Nichole received her Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant degree from Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois. She has extensive experience in both orthopedic and neuro rehab. Nichole enjoys gardening and attending her children’s sporting events. Nicole joined the NHCC team in September of 2012.
Social Services Director - Mariah Fox, BSW
Mariah started out in healthcare as a CNA working in long term care. After receiving her Baccalaureate of Social Work degree from Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, she went on to practice Social Work in residential substance abuse and community based mental health. Mariah enjoys exercising, swimming, being outdoors, and spending time with her friends and family. Mariah joined the NHCC team in September of 2013.
Dietary Manager - Sarah Rodrigues
Sarah’s experience includes over 10 years of business management in Retail, Cosmetology, and Small Business finances. The last 3 years, she has been working from home as an Account Manager for two small businesses. She has a 3-year-old son, Lucas, he will be starting preschool. Sarah’s hobbies include collecting Stones and Crystals, Drawing, Writing, and Gold Prospecting in Colorado.
Maintenance Manager - Matthew Perdue
Matthew started in Maintenance in August of 2018 in a Long-Term Care Facility. He enjoys spending time with his family and reading!
